How can you tell a Chinese factory from a trading company? Often times when sourcing for a product from China using a B2B site, you’re not sure if the supplier is a middleman or a manufacturer. For example one of my readers had this question:

“We have found a product and ready to place a order. But before that, we are dealing with a supplier and we are not sure if the supplier is just a “Trading Company” or a manufacturer. The price she quoted seems to be higher and she keeps on increasing the price for a smaller change or any question with the product. We want to keep this product for the long run if the sales goes good. So, we are looking for a supplier for the long run and with the best price. Please provide your suggestions and what things to be considered.. I am looking for the manufacturer. Thank you, -N.”

Before we dive in, first let’s look at why people prefer to work with factories over trading companies? Here’s are some advantages of working with a factory:

Lower prices – You cut out the middleman by going direct to the source

Transparency – you are dealing with the factory directly. In cases of any problems you know where to find them. Factories tend (though not always) not to disappear overnight.

Guanxi – You are building a relationship with the factory and their boss, ideally. Over time this trust leads to more cooperation, lower prices, better terms, and other intangibles that help to grow a business relationship.

Note there are benefits to working with a trading company if you’re able to find a trustworthy one. Potential benefits of working with a trading company include:

Saving time – they can handle the sourcing process for you

Find suppliers that you cannot locate yourself – Alibaba is not a complete listing of all suppliers. Many factories in fact do not have export licenses meaning that they cannot export products by themselves. They need someone (usually a trading company) with the proper export license to do it for them.

Better communications and better English – Trading companies typically are more polished than factories. They may have better presentations of their products and better English skills since they are focusing on the sales side (rather than the manufacturing).

Here are four quick ways to tell a factory from a trading company without flying to China.

Ask them

Sounds obvious but most times when I ask the question are you a factory or a trading company, trading companies will reveal their true identifies.

Red flags – If they give you a wishy-washy answer like we have a “partner factory” that likely means that they are a middleman. Real manufacturers have their own factories.

Common thread test

By checking a supplier’s product line, you can get a good sense whether they are a manufacturer or middleman. Factories will typically have a common thread through their entire product line. For example they may specialize in silicon rubber products. So a factory will likely have silicon gloves, silicon baking sheets, and silicon measuring cups. It makes sense because their entire production line and supply chain is configured to specialize in this one material. They have “depth” in the product selection using this material.

On the other hand, if a supplier offers iPhone cases, selfie sticks, and USB Power banks, it’s likely they are a middleman. Why? Because there’s no way one factory can manufacture such a broad line of products. The middleman is picking and choosing hot sellers from different factories and putting them on Alibaba.

Ask technical questions

I find that asking technical questions will reveal a lot about the supplier. If they can answer them then this builds confidence. If however they don’t know answers to simple questions that is a red flag.

RED FLAG: In one case when I was sourcing iPhone charging cases, one of my team members found a supplier on Alibaba that offered cases similar to one of the leading competitors. We contacted them and setup a visit. Once we met I asked the nice ladies about the charging life and they couldn’t even provide the most basic answers about charging times and battery life. Upon further questioning, they admitted that they were a trading company.

Ask technical questions to find the TRUTH: Factory or Middlemen

Ask to visit their factory

If the supplier is truly a factory interested in doing business with you they would gladly welcome your visit. In my years of sourcing, I’ve never been turned away about a legitimate factory that’s interested in doing business with us. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain by hosting you.

However, if they seem evasive about the factory or if they make an excuse that the factory is very far away then this hints that they are a trading company, probably with something to hide. In other words they don’t want to reveal the true identify of the factory to you, which is not a trustworthy way of doing business.

In summary remember the 80/20 Rule. These four methods will let you quickly identify about 80% of the middlemen found on Alibaba. And you can do this without visiting China.

What’s your #1 challenge when it comes to finding direct manufacturers versus middle men? Or do you prefer to work with sourcing agents? Hit reply and let me know!

Please see the speeches of President Mr Xenofon Zolotas of Hellenic Bank to World bank in 1957 and 1959 in New York in English……… in order to answer your questions and worries about Hellas.

Kyrie, I eulogize the archons of the Panethnic Numismatic Thesaurus and the Oecumenical Trapeza for the orthodoxy of their axioms methods and policies, although there is an episode of cacophony of the Trapeza with Hellas. With enthusiasm we dialogue and synagonize at the synods of our didymous Organizations in which polymorphous economic ideas and dogmas are analyzed and synthesized. Our critical problems such as the numismatic plethora generate some agony and melancholy. This phenomenon is charateristic of our epoch. But, to my thesis we have the dynamism to program therapeutic practices as a prophylaxis from chaos and catastrophe. In parallel a panethnic unhypocritical economic synergy and harmonization in a democratic climate is basic. I apologize for my eccentric monologue. I emphasize my eucharistia to your Kyrie to the eugenic and generous American Ethnos and to the organizers and protagonists of this Ampitctyony and the gastronomic symposia»...

It is Zeus' anathema on our epoch and the heresy of our economic method and policies that we should agonize the Skylla of nomismatic plethora and the Charybdis of economic anaemia.
It is not my idiosyncracy to be ironic or sarcastic but my diagnosis would be that politicians are rather cryptoplethorists. Although they emphatically stigmatize nomismatic plethora, they energize it through their tactics and practices. Our policies should be based more on economic and less on political criteria. Our gnomon has to be a metron between economic strategic and philanthropic scopes.
In an epoch characterized by monopolies, oligopolies, monopolistic antagonism and polymorphous inelasticities, our policies have to be more orthological, but this should not be metamorphosed into plethorophobia, which is endemic among academic economists.
Nomismatic symmetry should not antagonize economic acme. A greater harmonization between the practices of the economic and nomismatic archons is basic.
Parallel to this we have to synchronize and harmonize more and more our economic and nomismatic policies panethnically. These scopes are more practicable now, when the prognostics of the political end economic barometer are halcyonic.
The history of our didimus organization on this sphere has been didactic and their gnostic practices will always be a tonic to the polyonymous and idiomorphous ethnical economies. The genesis of the programmed organization will dynamize these policies.
Therefore, I sympathize, although not without criticism one or two themes with the apostles and the hierarchy of our organs in their zeal to program orthodox economic and nomismatic policies.
I apologize for having tyranized you with my Hellenic phraseology. In my epilogue I emphasize my eulogy to the philoxenous aytochtons of this cosmopolitan metropolis and my encomium to you Kyrie, the stenographers. “
This was the speech of Mr Zolotas 58 years ago in New York

The brightness has been dramatically improved by 5 times over the conventional LED on a same surface area and will be improved up to more than 10 times in the future. Currently, the brightness of a power chip LED in mass production is around 100 lumen but this new product, introduced by Seoul Semiconductor, produces 500 lumen which is 5 times better than a conventional product. As an example, when making a LED bulb for a 60W household bulb replacement, generally, 10-20 LED packages are used but when this new product is applied, the same brightness can be achieved with only 1-2 packages.

During the technology presentation in Jong Lo Gu (Korea), Seoul Semiconductor CEO Jung Hoon Lee expressed strong confidence in the new product by saying "For the past 20 years, I've worked very hard in this industry and it is safe to say that this new product is the culmination of 20 years of core technologies. It is the final stage of the LED development process." SSC will immediately begin production of this new product, and it will start sales in strategic markets abroad.

Professor Nakamura Shuji, who is also known as the father of LED, was also present at this event to comment on the technology of SSC. Professor Shuji Nakamura, continuously discussed as a candidate for the Nobel prize in physics, is currently a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and is also an advisor to SSC.

One of the main challenges faced by LED lighting manufacturers is dealing with waste heat produced by the bulb.Although a lot less energy is wasted through heat than in the case of a traditional light bulb, some heat loss still occurs. So that the intense heat does not degrade the long life
promised by the companies, the lamps need some kind of a cooling
mechanism.
GE, for example, uses what is called an active "synthetic jet"
technology that produces an air flow inside the lamp, pulling the hot
air out and creating a cooling air current.
Another obstacle used to be omnidirectional light - making the bulb give off light in all directions.
That is why in the past, LEDs were mostly used for spotlights and flashlights.
But now that this problem has been solved, they have to
compete with other products used for general lighting, such as
omnidirectional compact fluorescent lights and halogens.
Compact fluorescent lights are almost as energy efficient as LEDs, but cost a lot less.
Some big 'n’ bright news from the world of energy-efficient lighting today:
GE has announced
the world debut of the 27-watt Energy Smart LED bulb, a dimmable
100-watt replacement bulb that boasts superior energy-sipping lighting
technology — 25,000-hour (22.8-year) life span, 1,6000+ lumens, 3000K
color temperature — all wrapped up in a neat, tidy, and
incandescent-shaped (A19) package.

Developed at GE’s East Cleveland, Ohio, LED lab, the omnidirectional, instant-on bulb was designed in collaboration with GE ecoimagination Challenge winner, Austin-based Nuventix.
Given that as a LED bulb’s wattage output grows, so does its need for a
larger, more complex cooling chip system. This is where Nuventix, a
company that specializes in thermal management for electronics, stepped
in. To prevent the bulb from physically growing in size, GE tapped
Nuventix’s proprietary SynJet technology that replaces cooling fans with
a heat-dissipating oscillating membrane called a synthetic jet.
ays Steve Briggs, LED honcho at GE Lighting in a press release:

Our innovation team has tackled a previously insurmountable
technical challenge: cooling a 100-watt A-19 shaped replacement LED bulb
without making it physically bigger. Each subsystem such as optics,
electronics and thermals needed to be designed for miniaturization and
cooperative performance. We explored the limits of what’s possible and
pushed far beyond industry expectations and competitors’ thinking and
product offerings.
Our achievement does more than backfill for the 100-watt incandescent
bulb. We now have a clear path to attaining even higher light levels,
which will give customers more energy-efficient lighting options in both
commercial and residential settings. This product fills a real customer
need and further extends GE’s LED lighting leadership.

The mercury-free GE 27-watt Energy Smart LED was officially unveiled
May 9 in Las Vegas at the lighting industry’s big annual trade show
hoedown, Lightfair International.
It’s expected that the bulb will hit the shelves of North American
retailers during the first half of 2013. No set retail price has been
established at this point. GE’s game-changing 9-watt Energy Smart LED bulb
(A19 40-watt replacement) sells for about $45 a pop so I’m
guessing/hoping that this 100-watt replacement will also be in the under
$50 range.
Twitter is investigating the release of what appear to be thousands of user account passwords and e-mail addresses.
"We are currently looking into the situation. In the meantime, we have
pushed out password resets to accounts that may have been affected,"
Twitter spokesman Robert Weeks told CNET in an e-mail. "For those who
are concerned that their account may have been compromised, we suggest resetting your passwords and more in our Help Center."
The user data, so vast that it took five Pastebin pages to post, was released yesterday and blogged about on Airdemon.net, putting the number of accounts affected at 55,000 or more. It's unclear who posted the data, and why.
Weeks disputed that estimate, noting that many of the passwords and accounts seemed like duplicates.
"It's worth noting that, so far, we've discovered that the list of
alleged accounts and passwords found on Pastebin consists of more than
20,000 duplicates, many spam accounts that have already been suspended,
and many log-in credentials that do not appear to be linked (that is,
the password and username are not actually associated with each other),"
he said.
The list does seem a bit odd, with many passwords that
appeared to be robust, and a separation between e-mail addresses and
user IDs that hacker Adrian Lamo noted on Twitter wasn't representative
of a typical password dump.
We will update this story as we get more information.
Updated, 5:39 p.m. PT:
Adds comment about list being odd.
Update May 9 at 12:02 p.m. PT:
After Lamo and others found that at least some of the alleged account
data had been posted on the Web last year and speculated that the list
appeared to be compiled from various sources, including spam accounts,
Twitter provided CNET this statement when asked for comment: "We've
looked into this and can confirm that Twitter was not compromised. For
extra precaution, yesterday, we pushed out password resets to accounts
that may have been affected."

of Technology (KIT) have developed a night vision system that goes one
step further than existing infrared-based vision system: It does not
display potential obstacles. Instead, it illuminates the object directly
by means of a bright spotlight.

To see and to be seen is an important rule for safety in particular
during twilight or night time on remote country roads. "During dusk and
dawn, the likelihood of getting involved into an accident with
pedestrians, bicyclists or game animals rises exponentially," explained
KIT researcher Marko Hoerter who works at the KIT institute for
measuring and control technology. While systems are available that make
such objects visible on a screen, they are not very practical, finds
Hoerter, since they require that the driver actively watches out for
them during the ride which is less than optimal from the perspective of
safety.

Hoerter has developed an infrared camera-based system which analyzes
the image content, identifies any objects in the course of the car and
illuminates them shortly with a highly focused LED-based spotlight. This
directs the driver's attention to the respective object without
requiring that drivers deviates their eyes from the road.

Centerpiece of the system is a camera and a powerful computer to
process the video data stream. The challenge was the huge amount of data
to be processed in real-time, Hoerter explains. The image processing
computer used in the system can tell animals and humans from other
objects within 40 milliseconds. In addition, it can transform and
determine the real 3D position, direction and speed of these objects
from the data contained in the 2D infrared images and the speed at which
they change. Based on the results of these calculations, the system
also computes the probability of an accident. If there is a significant
probability of an impact, a motor-driven apparatus directs the spotlight
to the object in question. The system does not generate a continuous
light but instead illuminates the object only for a short period in time
to avoid bedazzling the person in question.

The approach has been tested during a field trial in a rural
environment with 33 participants. The results were encouraging: The
light marker enables one to recognize obstacles earlier and faster. On
average, the drivers saw the obstacle 35 to 40 meters earlier.
Consequently, they had two to three seconds more time to react.
Just a few weeks ago we heard about work proceeding on two solar power plants totaling 45 megawatts, a hefty amount for a country of fewer than 8 million people. And now the southeastern European nation is the source of what is purported to be the first LED screen with an integrated solar panel.
A Sofia-based company called Megatex announced the development, an extension of its line of products such as LED walls, LED screens, sport information systems, digital clocks and thermometers, digital transport systems and dynamic message displays. So we’re talking about a large display here – a 5 kilowatt solar panel integrated into an LED display that could be used for open-air applications and can be installed on stadiums or used as a billboard. An d,as the company noted, “what makes it different is the fact that the screen can be installed even in areas with no access to electricity, such as highways.”
